Camp Cheerio 2022

Getting Brock ready for overnight camp was a long process! He picked out the trunk design about 3 months in advance.

And then I packed it.

Finally Opening Day had arrived - we left out early enough to stop at the Cracker Barrel near Elkin for lunch.

A few more miles and a rise of 2,000 feet in elevation (compared to Elkin), we had finally arrived! It was amazing how much hasn't changed (even though there have been lots of changes since I was last there!)!

"New" Arts & Crafts building to the left.

"New" bridge and boardwalk along the lake!

After meeting his counselors, bringing in his trunk and making his bed, we made our way to the gymnasium to purchase some expensive cheerio sweatshirts!

It was starting to mist a little and while I wanted to walk over to the gazebo for pictures, that might have been a little much for my anxious boy. We stopped to take pictures from the porch gym.

Another view from the porch gym - towards the swimming pool.

This is a panorama that looks much better enlarged. Of course Kade was mid-run so that's why he looks a bit skinnier.

Brock and his cabin for the week!

After we dropped him off, Brent and I looked at each other and could tell we were each thinking the same thing - please have a good time!! Thankfully, the camp uploads pictures every evening of the day's activities, so we didn't have to wait too long to see some smiles.

Brock and his cabin-mates goofing around before their swim test - Brock is the far right, second row with the light-blue blanket on his head.

Croatan Cabin for 5C!

Brock picked some good activities! Soccer!

Arts & Crafts (and swimming, based on his wearing of a bathing suit)

Archery - with a left-handed bow!

On this evening, they combined cabins with their "porch-mates" and each duo performed skits. (Brock has a red hat on in this picture)

Brock said they lip-synced to a song and he was one of the back-up dancers - he couldn't remember the song title.

Back to soccer!

This was during an evening activity - Capture the Flag with water balloons. He's probably coordinating some elaborate invasion on the other team.

After evening programs every night, the kids got a chance to visit the store for soda, ice cream, candy - Brock chose Gatorade in a can most nights with an ice cream sandwich.

He returned tired and happy and sat up talking to us for several nights about all the fun things he did.

Fun side note - my first time at Camp Cheerio was exactly 30 years prior - 1992. Camp looked a bit different back then.

1992 picture I took from the Gym looking out to the Riding area and flag pole.

We tried to keep busy while Brock was gone - but we were all missing him.

Brent and I took Kade to Dave & Buster's one evening for a special dinner and play time.

Last note, he did return from camp with a bit of a cough..... that turned into the worst flu we've ever seen. 104.5 - 101.5 temperature for a solid week. And on day 4, he added double ear infection. Poor guy.

Taekwondo and Boat Day

The weekend Brock and I were visiting family in Huntersville, Brent and Kade were back home for a Taekwondo tournament! Kade was on it - he had been practicing inside, outside, during tv time, during meals, etc. Ha!

Kade completed his form first - Songahm 2.

Kade asked to compete on this cycle's weapon - bo staff. Practice sessions with the bo staff were done outside as lots of space is needed. I thought he did great! Brent said he earned all 9's!

So proud of this little boy! He earned a medal for his weapons performance!

The following weekend, we had our much overdue lake day. Water was nice and warm, but not bathtub warm.

A fan favorite - jumping off the side of the boat.

See how we parked the boat at the gas station to get some gas? Everyone was happy because they didn't know what was just around the corner.

The boat storage place is less than a mile away - as Brent was reversing the boat into the spot, we heard a dreadful, and unfortunately familiar, noise. The trailer brake rotor came loose and prevented the boat from going backwards. Thank goodness we had two cars, I was able to take the boys home while Brent stayed behind for an hour and a half removing the brake just to get it back in the parking spot. Ugh.... poor Brent and his trailer issues.

A Moose picture to end on a happy note!
