Nags Head 2020 Beach Trip - Part II

On Monday, the two elder fisherman set out early (5:30AM) from Oregon Inlet, heading 40 miles southeast, to see what they could catch. I decided to take a break from the beach and Blaine and I herded the littles to Jockey Ridge State Park. Jockey Ridge is the tallest active sand dune in the eastern United States (per wikipedia).

Here we are about a 10 minute walk from the car and we were already hot.

Both boys had brand new kites (thank you Five Below) for this adventure!
Stupid thing took our money and did not work :(
We trekked to one of the tallest points.... it was quite a hike. What do you think Kade was pretending his kite packaging was?

If you guessed Lightsaber, then you would have been correct! Everything is a lightsaber these days.....

The afternoon rain has to go somewhere... these are dried up creek beds.

Hi Blaine! He still has a smile on his face!

So hot, so steep, so sandy....

We made it! We reached the top! You could see the ocean on one side and the intracoastal on the other!

I was able to get Kade's kite flying!!

It went pretty downhill from there. Brock's kite wouldn't rise in the air and when I started working on it, Kade decided he needed a drink. Of course he pulled the kite down and in the process, the strings went into a tangled mess. No more kites flew after that, no matter how hard Blaine and I tried. We were happy to get back in the air conditioned car with some drinks and snacks in our belly.

JUST about the same time as we were eating our snacks, the men phoned in saying they were all done fishing for the day!!

Brock was thrilled to watch the unloading!!

 39 inches of yellowfin tuna!!

The men and their bounty! 3 Mahi Mahi, 1 Yellowfin Tuna, and 1 Wahoo!! Good reason to stop fishing - the fish box was full!

Brock wanted to pick up the fish the same way Grandpa does!

If you'd like to see how Brent and his Dad snagged the Wahoo.... see video below. It wasn't until the fish got close to the boat, did Brent realize he had a Wahoo on the reel! Wahoo (Ono) is considered the best eating fish these days!

Brent got his tools (and helper) ready to clean some fish!

It took some time to clean all the fish, divvy them out in separate baggies, and clean the table up. Just think about this picture the next time you picnic at an outdoor table at your beach rental. FISH GUTS, YUM!!
